SQL Server communicates with MSSearch using a named pipe. You can watch this through filemon from sysinternals. here is a sample session - you might want to run this just to see what is happening Pipe\MSSearch SUCCESS The accounts that MSSearch uses to communicate with SQLServer need to be mapped to each other.

MSSearch Disappearing Registry entries
First of all, while SQL Server can use the AWE memory, the MSSearch service cannot. In fact, it's memory allocation is limited to 512MB of RAM - if and only if 512MB of RAM is available and not used by either the OS, SQL Server or any other process on the server. The memory allocation for the MSSearch service is

SQL7-MSSearch hangs
Whilst moving the catalogs themselves is relatively straight forward (as per Q240867) - is it also possible to move the Config,Gather Logs and Projects folders to a new drive without uninstalling and reinstalling MSSEARCH service - we'd prefer to keep downtime to a minimum and not have to reboot the server (SQL2000

so i understand, you're saying that MSSearch can only use a max of 512MB and by setting the resource_usage to 5, it will take all of this. If there is 512 available will it not take all of it when the setting is 3? Does this include virtual memory? With this in mind, how much would recommend leaving for the OS

There is Plenty of physical ram available to the system and to mssearch. The resourceusage is set at 3. What happens if I change it? I can't find an answer in the books online. mssearch.exe easting up memory
I could better understand the 25% cpu busy for mssearch if it correlated with the running of the scheduled job you referred to --- we have the same one --- but it doesn't. The job only runs for about 3 seconds and mssearch grinds away continually. It's also unclear to me why mssearch service can't be stopped.
